David Wertman's rare Kara Suite LP turned jazz drummer Steve Reid's Mustevic Sound label into a label in its own right. Reid's surprising decision to put his own bassist in the spotlight was typical of his unusual strategies and challenged the common perception of the soloist in the changing landscape of jazz. Wertman's only solo album combined impassioned string work, intricate spiritual dialogues and punchy cyclic riffing.
