Ksenia Voy Kheninen is a visual artist living in Helsinki, working with sculpture. Her works are primarily constructed from porcelain, as well as found objects, textiles, drawing, and text. Her textile education received in the Netherlands is evident in her approach to surface and form.
Voy Kheninen grew up as an Ingrian Finn in East Karelia, a region where the question of which cultures and languages belong there has never been fully resolved. She moved to Finland at the age of fifteen, bringing with her the longing for home of a person shaped by a place that was already disappearing. Her works grow from this experience.
The works are created in longer series of sculptures that address memory and cultural continuity, the inner life of the Other, and intergenerational empathy, where the object serves as a witness. The latest series, Sekretiki, takes its name from a children's game in her childhood region, where small caches were built in the ground, covered with glass and soil – partly visible, partly hidden.
