Kilpeläinen, Pupu - Who's there DRAWING
Title of the work: Who's there?
Dimensions: A3
Technique: oil pastels
Pupu Kilpeläinen is a 25-year-old cartoonist from Helsinki. He works mainly in comics, self-publishing small magazines of his works. In addition to comics, Kilpeläinen also creates oil pastel works.
The Outsider Art Festival will feature a series of oil pastel works by Kilpeläinen. Key themes in Kilpeläinen's art include self-acceptance, the feeling of being an outsider in childhood, and the impact of childhood circumstances on her current life. As an autistic person, it has been difficult for her to express herself verbally. Through art and comics, she has found a way to examine her own feelings and thoughts, and to make her own voice heard.
Curators' comments: "Kilpeläinen's delightfully naive and cartoon-like crayon drawings manage to tackle even difficult subjects in a way that feels light. The works are technically skillful; they feel like paintings."
