Mika Mäkiranta is a 54-year-old self-taught visual artist from Tampere. In addition to making pictures, he writes poetry, prose and song lyrics. “The need to create is coded into my DNA. I’m lucky that way. The world is a wonderful place. I’m always faced with something new like a monkey with a wrench,” he says. Mäkiranta has held previous exhibitions at, among others, S-Galleria (1999), Tornin Ateljee Bar (2000) and Tampere Hall’s Winter Garden (2024).

Curators' comments: “Mäkiranta's mythically dystopian photographs of monkeys and scary holes make you wonder what is real in the picture and what is not.”
