Joe McPhee is in top form on both tenor and soprano saxophones, moving from the relaxed, conscious mood of Nation Time to a more fragmented and textural exploration. John Snyder's analogue synthesizer is a great match for McPhee, as on their duo album Pieces of Light. South African drummer Makaya Ntshoko, meanwhile, is an element of surprise whose sensitivity and warmth are omnipresent even as he pushes the energy levels upwards.
