Risto Puurunen is a self-taught musician and visual artist who builds both his instruments and his artworks from scrap and wire. His artistic work includes moving camera obscura installations as well as immersive spatial artworks that utilize light, shadows, and 3D glasses.
Puurunen is best known as a member of the band Cleaning Women. With the band, he has performed internationally, provided live accompaniment for silent films, and composed music for documentaries. The band's latest album, Washer, was released in the autumn of 2025.
Furthermore, Puurunen is a key figure at the Joutsa-based Art Institution Haihatus, where he serves on the management team, is involved in the association that maintains its operations, and owns the properties and land administered by the association.
